Don’t Throw Out That PC Just Yet: Fixing Windows 11 Compatibility in Your BIOS
Few things are more frustrating than a popup telling you that a perfectly good computer has reached the end of the line. When operating system updates stop, it can feel like you are being forced to buy new studio gear before you are actually ready.
Before you assume your computer is obsolete, there is a good chance your hardware is capable of running Windows 11; it just needs a single setting enabled in the background.
What Is Blocking the Windows 11 Upgrade?
Microsoft requires specific hardware security features to install Windows 11, most notably TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) and Secure Boot.
Many desktop PCs and studio laptops built in the last five to eight years already have this hardware built right into the processor. However, manufacturers often shipped these machines with those features turned off by default.
When the Windows update checker scans your machine, it only sees that the feature is off, not that your computer is incapable. It gives you a generic "This PC cannot run Windows 11" message, leading many people to believe they need to replace a machine that has years of productive life left.
Checking the BIOS to Extend Your PC's Lifespan
The fix often comes down to entering your computer's BIOS/UEFI settings before Windows loads:
Intel Systems: Look for a setting called Intel PTT (Platform Trust Technology) under the Security or Advanced menu.
AMD Systems: Look for AMD fTPM in the CPU or Security configuration.
Dell / HP / Lenovo: Check under the Security tab for TPM Security or Firmware TPM and toggle it to Enabled.
Once you enable that toggle and save your changes, your computer will usually pass the Windows 11 compatibility check immediately. Flipping one switch can save you thousands of dollars and keep a reliable studio workhorse in service.
